Recovery

So, it turns out when your belly gets sliced into it takes a while to get better. I’m still recovering but overall I’m mostly just amused at the ridiculousness of recovery.

Highlights:

My energy level is super low. Like, low to the point where for the first week home I resorted to this
Photobucket
and was then super worried people would think I was just a jerk using one of those carts for fun.

I got taken on walks in the park by my husband. Where I’d bring juice and snacks and have to rest a lot. It reminded me of being a nanny. Except I was the child.
Photobucket
(this was taken to prove to my mom I was out of bed AND in people clothes. She was impressed)

Exciting news though, surgery kills your appetite! I didn’t want to eat much of anything for the first week or so. If you’re looking for a great way to drop 8 pounds have your appendix explode!

In my effort to eat something I bought dino nuggets, which are possibly the world’s greatest food. Meat shaped  like extinct things. Mmmm.
Photobucket

I was only allowed to lift 5 pounds for the first two weeks post surgery. Which meant no holding my fat baby cats.

They were deeply troubled and kept trying to snuggle. And I’d have to put my arm protectively over my incisions (since I was a lap converted to a full I have FOUR incisions! Three smaller plus a big one!)  and it’d just make them mad.
Photobucket

The doctor told me not very many people get an open appendectomy anymore so my cool scar is special.

And my three favorite post-appendectomy happenings

1. I worked for the first time on Friday. As a reward for working look what Jesus gave me
Photobucket
(there seems to be some policy at this school that when it’s your birthday you bring treats for ALL the teachers in the school? I don’t profess to understand it but there were three delicious birthdays.)

2. Hospital bill came
Photobucket
Lolz.

(we have great health insurance, I don’t owe anywhere near $26,000)

3. Look what they didn’t mark on my discharge form at the hospital
Photobucket
I got to call the doctor’s office and have the most awkward conversation EVER with the nurse about it! She used the word “positions”.

The Terrorists Won.

Important recent things in my life:

1. Went to Walmart two days before Christmas.

The terrorists have won.

We don’t live near a Walmart, so we never go (I’m not above Walmart, let’s not lie. Sometimes a girl needs elastic waist pants. But I’m not going to drive a half hour for some)  and we’d forgotten the majesty that a SuperCenter can be

Yeah, that’s a woman with a bleached mullet in footie pajamas and fake uggs.

Seriously guys, the terrorists won.

2. Went to Bend because it’s awesome. Evidence:

beer + sandwich at GoodLife is $9 before 4 on weekdays. Good beer + a bacon panini. For cheap.  Love it.

(Andrea btw rocks at Bend beer recommendations.)

3. Justin Beiber wrapping paper.

It’s real.

4. Baby Brother got the best Christmas present EVER

you’re welcome Baby Brother.

5. It’s 2012. Bitches.

Awesome

So, life has been busy lately. Teaching, working at the church, high five-ing the pope? It’s a busy life. Plus I was in my gorgeous friend’s wedding, had a blogger meetup, went to California for Thanksgiving, and when you put that all on top of the fact that being awesome like me is a full time job? I’m a slacker blogger.

But here’s just some of the awesome in my life as of late:

While in Indianapolis, I didn’t just high five the pope. Someone foolishly put me in charge of meals. Which resulted in going to a place called Mug ‘n’ Bun. Mug. ‘N’. Bun. How could you not?
Photobucket
It was delicious. And even the bread on my grilled cheeseburger was salty
Photobucket
I like salt.

And I found Matt from the Real World!
Photobucket
True story: Real World New Orleans was on when I was in HS, and one of my best friends was Mormon. So we loved seeing our respective faiths up on TV. And now Matt from the Real World works for a ministry program that my church uses. Rad! And he was super nice.

Also awesome? My college bestie Sam sent me this
Photobucket
If you don’t get it you clearly need to read more Feminist Ryan Gosling.

But the most awesomeness in my life? Totes my husband.

Evidence: some days I teach and work at the church. This can make for some long days. 2nd grade with a chaser of teenagers? Jesus help me. On one of those days I got home from work and found these
Photobucket

(Two tarts cookies! The best. And tiny, so you can eat like 10)

And this
Photobucket

And, most importantly, this
Photobucket

(whoever came up with the idea of pink cans of sparkling wine WITH straws is my best friend)

Marriage is awesome.

Hipster Thanksgiving

Man, you know what’s gotten way too mainstream?

Thanksgiving in November

So overplayed.

Dude, you know what people don’t celebrate as often in Portland?

Canadian Thanksgiving.

Oh yeah, it exists. It’s ok if you haven’t heard of it. Not many people have. But it’s huge in Canada.

And so much less commercialized. I hate overplayed Thanksgiving has gotten. It used to be cool you know?

I can’t believe people still wait till November for it. You realize celebrating in October also helps subvert Columbus day too? Don’t even get me started on Columbus. Friggin’ colonialism.

Know what else is overdone? Roses.

Dahlias are way better. Plus I got mine from a small farm. You’ve probably never heard of it.

I debated between PBR and a barrel aged sour to go with dinner, but the co-op was closed so we were stuck with wine.

Symphony is kind of a rare varietal. It’s ok if you haven’t hear of it.

(if you look closely there’s a chip in the wine glass. Cause it’s vintage)

For desert we had pie that I baked while my husband watched football. But I baked it in a totally subversive way, I swear.

(pumpkin pie is so overdone. Apple pie is where it’s at)

And then we watched Win a Date with Tad Hamilton on HBO.

Ironically of course.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

Marriage is Awesome and you go to the Beach.

We were on the coast to celebrate our wedding’s birthday. Which meant my husband had to take me out to dinner. Marriage is awesome.

Since we were in a tiny town, dinner options were limited.

Sure, we weren’t that far from other places but driving = one of us staying sober. And everyone knows sobriety is NOT how you stay in love.

But we were across the street from one of the only restaurants in town, Pacific Way Cafe. Which actually had really stellar reviews. Which is good because the other options were McMenamin’s or something called “Great Wall Restaurant and Lounge”

It’s also the town bakery in the morning. Which meant redic bread baskets
Photobucket
Three types of bread. Because you need variety in your carb consumption.

I honestly don’t get the people who give advice like “ask for no bread basket to save calories!”

Do they hate life? Joy? Happiness?

I ate my bread.

And my Cesar salad
Photobucket
For an entree I had halibut

Photobucket

The green beans with it were legit. Fresh and delicious and totally balanced out the fact that I’d just had a bread basket and mashed potatoes and a salad coated in cheese.

Eating in a restaurant with a bakery attached means you have to order dessert.

Strawberry tart for the husband
Photobucket
And creme brulee for me. Because my husband is a weird face and doesn’t like creme brulee.
Photobucket
Whatevs, more for me.

Post dinner we realized we clearly had more drinking to do. So we went to the one grocery store in town, and found some bubbly. And took it to the beach.
Photobucket
True story btw: room temp bubbly out of the bottle is hard to drink. Too many bubbles.
Photobucket
We persevered.

Watched the sun go down
Photobucket
And my husband took what is possibly my new favorite picture of us

Which he entitled “#marriageisawesomeandyougotothebeach”

Seriously, if you’re my facebook friend you can see, that’s the caption.

Cause marriage is awesome. Especially after a bottle of lukewarm bubbly.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Today was my last day of work for the summer. I had a killer summer gig, and I’ve only vaguely mentioned my summer job on here, so I thought I’d tell y’all what I’ve been up to.

Writting

Photobucket

I’m going to tell you about wat I did this summer. My summer was alot of fun. I did alot of fun things. One fun thing I did was to have a summer job. I did alot of fun things at my summer job. Three fun things I did were Teeching fort bilding, Teeching cake decorating, and a third thing I did was to be a Assistant to other teechers.

First I want to tell you about when I taut fort building. I taut fort bilding and it was fun. We did alot of fun things. One fun thing we did was we were bilding forts in the woods where if your not carful you can get lost and it is exciting and it is a litle scary two.

Photobucket

Won kid says he saw a Bear in the woods. “Theres a Bear!” but the rest of us didnt sea a bear because Im prety sure they dont live in Portland. We also were making forts in other places and won day we made a Big fort together and then we thru water balons at it and made it fall down it was really fun and we yelled alot “AHHHHH!” we said when we were throwing the water balons. It was fun.

Photobucket

We also builded with HUGE linkun logs. They are realy big and you can go inside when you make a house or something with them.

Photobucket

Next I will tell you about cake decorating. Cake decorating is fun. We used 42 pawnds of sugar! That is alot of sugar! Sugar got all over and we laffed. We make cakes and put stuf called fandont on it.

Photobucket

It was cool looking but not as much fun to eat. We made realy cool cakes and it was fun.
Photobucket

The last thing I am going to write about is helping the other teechers. This was fun because when I was the helper I didnt have to plan things or be in truble if a kid got hurt or somthing and I helped at alot of fun camps. Camps like golf and comic books and writting and things. We goed on feeld trips to. Feeld trips are when you go to another place and spend time their. We went to places like a Golf place and a Park and things. It was fun.

Photobucket

So now you know more about my summer vacation. It was fun. The part I liked the best was that I get paid when I am doing the fun things. I also liked the days when we eat popsikles.

Photobucket

The End.

No Excuse.

Hey friends!

Remember when I blogged?

Yeah, me neither.

I’d give excuses about “being busy” but seriously? I read a book last week entirely because it boasted on the cover “by the author of The Princess Diaries!”

Clearly if I have time to read books that deep I’m not super busy.

But I was busy, and then I was decompressing and attempting to not kill my garden and buying unnecessary dresses.

But I have done a lot since I last blogged, so let’s play catch up shall we?
Photobucket
The husband and I went to the coast for our anniversary last month. Which sounds all cute and romantic or whatever but seriously? We went because he had a meeting in Astoria. Fun!

Astoria is super old. It has historical stuff. And a brewery. I’ll give you a dollar if you can guess which of those two things we spent more time at
Photobucket
Yup, the brewery! History will be there later.

Ft George makes delicious beer. And it’s in cans so it’s extra sustainable. When you drink it you’re basically planting a tree.
Photobucket
(that my friends is a canning line)

Every day is Arbor Day in our house.

We stayed in the Commodore Hotel which seriously looks like it’s competing on America’s Next Ace Hotel. I mean that in a good way though-it was cute, and a fun mix of like, fishing nets and sleekness.
Photobucket

Plus you could rent Free Willy for free from the front desk (it was shot in Astoria!)

There was a cute little coffee shop attached to the hotel
Photobucket
I had to kill time while the husband was doing his work stuff so I grabbed lunch from it
Photobucket
I like sandwiches with bacon, and they like me back. It also had chicken, pesto, and avocado.

It was delicious. Although I didn’t eat lunch until almost 3, and I’d swam for like an hour (another time killing device-the town aquatic center!) so my arm would’ve been equally tasty at that point I bet.

I wandered Astoria a bit while killing time as well and found a store with this
Photobucket
Not sketchy!

I refrained from buying any. But just barely.

I’ll maybe be back to blogging regularlyish now-it’s my last week of working for the summer.

Plus I am getting a wisdom tooth out tomorrow so I’ll have cool painkillers, which I think will make my writing even more manic and less coherent!  Yay!
